Rebecca by Lee Konitz
Alto Sax
The three musical masterpieces transcribed in this volume were recorded in 1950 by to of the most advanced musicians in jazz at the time, Lee Konitz and Billy Bauer.
As one who wasn't yet born when they came out, I don't know much about the impact they made at the time. I do know one story: Billy and Lee were sitting in Birdland, and Blossom Dearie walked in and said that if she were ever to be stranded on a desert island and could choose just one record to have with her, she would take Rebecca. I don't know if that reaction was general, but I will say, having spent a lot of time with it, that that's just the kind of record it is. It not only stays fresh after countless listening's, it has a depth of beauty that makes like itself more beautiful, a quality of calm that I experience as no less than a healing force.
